What is PET?
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the building block of the common polyester chain. Polyester resin manufacturers create PET from mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) and purified terephthalic acid (PTA), which is derived from crude oil and natural gas.
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE), a strong, stiff synthetic fibre and resin and a member of the polyester family of polymers
PET (also named PETE) is a kind of polyester material for fiber, injection moulded parts, as well as blow-moulded bottles and jars. Special grades are offered with the required properties for the different applications.
PET is linear thermoplastic (long-chain molecule consists of repeating units shown as figure right), white but bluish resin made from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol through poly-condensation. PET is supplied by the resin manufacturers in the form of small pellets, each about 0.05 grams. PET came into prominence in the 1950s as a textile material. Its strength, temperature tolerance and wear-resistance made it an ideal replacement for, or addition to natural fibers such as silk, cotton and wool.
It has good anti osmosis, low water absorbability and good toughness. PET films tensile strength is similar with aluminium film's, and is three times that of PC and PA film. PET film is transparent. Its tensile strength can reach 1/3~1/2 of steel's if dealt by oriented draw. It's the toughest thermoplastic film. It will be burnt with yellow flame and will burst when burning. And it will continue burning when away from fire.
Suitable for Varied Use
PET is a transparent, lightweight, strong, safe, shatterproof and recyclable packaging material with an inherent barrier, making it suitable for a wide array of product applications.
PET packages are made in two ways:
Blow Moulded to create bottles (and other narrow mouth containers), or
thermoformed from sheet (to create items such as clamshell produce or bakery containers).
Products packaged in PET include:
Modern Convenience & Innovation
PET is a shatterproof, safe package option for both home and away-from-home applications.
PET is easy to store, carry, clean up and re-seal, making it the ideal package to accommodate active lifestyles. PET is easy to work with, allowing for new and innovative package design. Offers customer choice for a wide variety of applications, including salad dressings, pasta sauce, peanut butter, ketchup, wine and beer.
Applications for PET
Beverage bottles for bottled water, carbonated soft drinks, milk, juice, sports and energy drinks, bottles, jars, punnets, tubs and trays for food items, bottles for household, personal care and pharmaceutical products, sheet and film for packaging.
